Is the Tech World That Flat?
A Careful Look at Globalization and the U.S. Tech Industry

Professor Norm Matloff
Department of Computer Science
UC Davis
Wednesday, November 9, 2005
12-2pm, Harris Room,119 Moses Hall

In recent years there has been much controversy over the subject of globalization and the U.S. tech industry, particularly in the area of software development. This global flow, involving both goods and services, has generated much shoot-from-the-hip rhetoric on both sides of the controversy, ranging from political accusations aimed at “Benedict Arnold” firms to Econ 101 platitudes that “all nations win.”

Yet careful analysis has been largely missing in this debate. Though both sides of the controversy cite research work, the studies have suffered from inadequate raw data, lack of understanding of the nature of the industry, and ideological bias.

This talk will attempt to remedy those problems, presenting a more careful look at issues such as degree of globalization of the industry, and impact on the U.S. economy and society.
